The new development will offer activities such as scuba diving and hiking at beach and volcano locations.

Discovery Communications Inc. announced the creation of a theme park in Liberia, Guanacaste, which is expected to require a one billion dollar investment. Construction will start in 2018 and the park is expected to be inaugurated by 2020.

Discovery Costa Rica will offer activities such as hiking and scuba diving across four locations at beaches, parks, and volcanoes, with a focus on biodiversity and conservation.

These plans were announced in a Bloomberg publication, and confirmed in a Facebook video posted by Costa Rican president Luis Guillermo Solis.

The Natural Beauty of Discovery Costa Rica

The first phase of the theme park’s development will be installed on a farm known as Sun Ranch, which is more than 2,000 acres (880 hectares) large. It’s located 2.3 kilometres from Daniel Oduber Airport, and 5.3 kilometres from Guanacaste’s largest city, Liberia.

The ranch has permission for a water well, and to operate a dry quarry for 4.5 million cubic meters of materials. The area is also full of remarkable natural beauty, including rock canyons.

The development of Discovery Costa Rica will be lead by the Sun Latin America company along with Discovery Communications Inc., which has authorized the use of its brand name for the adventure park and will act as a franchisor.

Discovery Communications Inc. owns the Discovery Channel and Animal Planet television channels.

“Discovery Costa Rica will include a water park, as well as Discovery brand hotels and restaurants,” said Richard Wirthlin, president of investor relations at Sun Latin America, the developer leading the project, to a U.S. media source.

The project hopes to bring viewers to experience Costa Rica first hand, rather than through a TV screen. They hope to offer millennials an experience beyond lounging in beach chairs. President Solis also stated that the theme park’s development will generate employment, investment, and business linkages in Guanacaste.

It’s worth noting that the Guanacaste region has the most extensive tourism infrastructure and offers the greatest number of hotel options in Costa Rica. Last January, the Costa Rican Tourism Institute (ICT, in Spanish), confirmed the construction of five new hotels in this tourist center.
